Matthew received his Honours from Exeter University in the UK, and then completed a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology, at Swinburne University in Australia where he continues to lecture today.
Matthew's key areas of professional interest are working with adults who are questioning, or have confirmed diagnosis of ASD or Asperger's. His other area of interest in addiction in particular behavioural addictions.
His first work role was at a residential withdrawal facility in Fitzroy, before moving on to help young offenders with substance use issues in the western suburbs of Melbourne. From here he moved to adult drug and alcohol services, before being recruited to design and coordinate a 28 day inpatient detox and rehab at a hospital in Dandenong.
From here he spent 5 years managing research and training at Caraniche, Australia’s largest private provider of forensic psychology services, where he helped the organisation to diversify both in terms of broadening the training courses offered, and branching into community drug and alcohol treatment. During this time he coordinated evaluations of the Family Violence court programs and community rehab programs, as well as reviewing and drafting new guidelines and a system for forensic drug and alcohol treatment in Victoria.
He has been working in private practice since January 2013, and was the Director of Hurstwood Clinic in South Yarra, Melbourne, providing training, supervision, and clinical services to individuals and organisations, including providing both basic and advanced supervision training for the Australian Psychological Society, training around Addiction and Working with Resistance for both the New Zealand Psychological Society, and workforce development for all of the publicly funded addiction services in Malta.
